civ∙il war
noun:
a war between citizens of the same country.
(merriam-webster dictionary)

The First Modern War

When discord becomes so great between countrymen that they take up arms against one another, there can be no real winner. For every death and injury, the country suffers twice - once for the victim, once for the aggressor. Thus was the case in the American Civil War.

Over the course of this four-year conflict, the U.S. saw the death of over 620,000 of her sons and another 800,000 fall injured and captured.

As seen in this graphic, the numbers and effect are difficult to comprehend:

The flames of battle scorched not just the earth, but families too...

The extent of the war can be seen in this video, which features a chronology of events and battles, as the Union and Confederate forces clash over 4 long years.
